These dueling pistols were manufactured in London, England in the early 1800’s, and were used for a duel in St. John’s.
Allegedly, conflict arose between two members of the Royal Newfoundland Veteran Companies, Captain Mark Rudkin and Ensign John Philpot. They were both vying to marry a woman from Quidi Vidi. Philpot was killed.
This is believed to be the last duel waged in Newfoundland and Labrador, which was fought on March 30th, 1826 in St. John’s.
